Roosevelt State Park - Morton, Mississippi

Tuesday April 29, 2025 (Day 18)

After completing our 10:00 am tour of Stanton Hall in Natchez, we took advantage of a late check-out from the Riverview RV Park and departed for our next destination around noon.  Sarah had given us a “Epic RV Trips” book for Christmas and we’re following portions of numerous recommended routes in our cross-country trip.  The Natchez Trace follows an 18th century native American route between New Orleans and Nashville, Tennessee.  I’ve yet to master the RV-safe routing software and instead of following the intended historic path, I ended up on the “efficient” but much less culturally significant US Hwy 61 and Interstate 55.  (I will say during this trip we have traveled on parts of Interstate-5 (through Portland), I-15, I-25, I-35, and now I-55.)

We arrived early afternoon at a newly renovated Roosevelt State Park near Morton, MS,.  We did not have advance reservations but there was sufficient availability on a Tuesday afternoon in April  But now for the big decision – do we opt for the easy pull-through site or the picturesque lakefront back-in site?  We were going to have to do it sometime right?  We had not been faced with backing the trailer since our training days April 16-17.  Showing my extreme confidence in Susan’s spotting and guiding capabilities, I took the lakefront option.  Fortunately, the park’s renovation created nice 15-fott wide, angled, and level sites.  We executed the jacking & chasing technique fairly effectively and deprived the neighboring sites of the opportunity for trailer-backing spectator sport!  Success!

We enjoyed a 4-mile walk around the lake and a dinner at the picnic table at our campsite.  Despite previous stays at State Parks in Colorado (2) and Texas, this was the first night that truly felt like camping.

Wednesday morning we took another hike on the Civil War Hill trail.  We don’t know whether there was any historic reason for the trail name, but it was a nice woodsy hike overly gently rolling terrain and little creeks.  (As I write this on May 12, I will give Roosevelt State Park as my #1 ranked campground to date for it’s attractive site and scenic view.)
