The weather forecast predicted snow at high elevations along our planned route along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. Despite being 2-day driving school graduates, we decided snow driving qualified as post-graduate studies. i.e. We headed to the plains of east Colorado. It was our longest driving day at 295 miles, but uneventful – just the way a long travel day should be! We took turns driving as we crossed the panhandle of Oklahoma (state #5 for the trip) and into the panhandle of Texas and finished our first audio book. The small town of Dumas, Texas welcomes travelers by providing a city park with free 1-day RV sites complete with electric and water hookups. While not the most scenic of stays, it was convenient for a short overnight stay.

It was another 250 + mile driving day, but pleasantly punctuated by my first trip to Buc-ee's . What a crazy place! After an extended browsing session, we continued on to Arrowhead Lake State Park south of Wichita Falls, Texas. The travel was easy and I was excited to explore the lake. We successfully unhitched the camper, hooked up utilities and were ready to enjoy some leisure time and exercise by taking a walk to the lake. We made it 100 yards before being chased back to the camper by lightning and thunder, which, along with heavy rain, proceeded for the next 12 hours! It was quite a storm, but we’re happy to report the camper held watertight! Once again, the Good Lord was watching over us - I would not have been comfortable driving in those conditions!

Travel continued to Allen, Texas to visit the Roncal family, (our niece, Christina, her husband Paul, and their three children (Claire (4), Isaac (2), and Luke (3 months). Negotiating Dallas area highways and suburban driving provided some new challenges.. We enjoyed an Easter Sunday brunch and some fun play time with the kids. Susan had the pleasure of visiting with them and her sister Mary Pat for the full week!
I departed for the 2-hour solo drive to Athens Texas. Note to self – avoid 7-lane metro highway driving! A bit harrowing, but no incidents. I arrived at Texan RV Park about 5:00 pm and prepared for my week or RV repair and maintenance training.
